On Thursday morning, roughly 500 elementary school children converged on Ocean Beach to perform a massive clean-up. It was a great undertaking given the requisite organization needed to bring together kids from both San Francisco and Marin County. The mission was to educate them on how to be environmentally aware, particularly in regard to their carbon footprint and the delicate nature of coastal ecosystems.
Wendy Dalia who heads up educational initiatives at the Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary, put together this enterprise. I found out she used to do educational initiatives for the Boston chapter of Surfrider and grew up 2 or 3 towns over from my own neck of the woods, which was a nice surprise. She managed to do a great job with the program and as part of a wrap-up, an artist was hired to put together an image on the beach that would be populated by the children and respective volunteers:
The aerial was done by Kevin Lozaw - big thanks!
And stoked kids:
This is a great program and it brings school kids from all socio-economic walks of life to one place to partake in a great team-building activity. The program has been around for several years and continues to remain popular, productive, and effective.
Thank you again Wendy!
